The event in question is Barry Durand's Swing Fling.  The story, which
I also heard from an extremely reliable source, is that Mr. Flynn
entered a Showcase Swing contest with only two other couples, and was
placed out of the money (6th or 11th).

And as a dj for Halloween Swing Thing the pst several years, I can
vouch for it's existence.  Either that or I'm hsllucinating every year
on the same weekend:)
